The IndieHackers podcast, which celebrated founders who hadn't raised venture capital, has now ended. The podcast ran from 2017 to April 2023 and was hosted by Courtland Allen (and later with his brother Channing) . It's sad to see it go! Luckily all the podcast episodes are still available wherever you get your podcasts. Here are 10 of the best Indie Hackers podcast episodes:
Lynne Tye
Lynne shared her success with Key Values, a website that shows you which companies to work for based on a range of criteria like work-life balance, working styles etc. She gives a lot of advice on being persistent, pitching to sales teams and leaning on your advantages (she had a great network in San Francisco).
Scott Keyes
Scott's Cheap Flights is an incredible success story given it's a very simple business. He finds cheap flight deals and emails them to people. You can sign up to a premium membership for more details and a more tailored experience such as only getting flights for airports you are interested in. It's that simple! In 2018 it was making $3 million. The company later re-branded to Going.
Ben Tossell
Ben sold MakerPad, a community of no-code learners, to Zapier. It's likely to have been for at least a million dollars based on the fact MakerPad was making around $400,000 a year at the time from membership fees.
AJ from Carrd
AJ is an anonymous founder from the US. He's hit internet success with his Carrd (affiliate) website maker. Carrd let's you make single page landing pages very easily. AJ originally bootstrapped the business but later took a small amount of angel investment.
Sam Parr
Sam created The Hustle daily newsletter, which was monetized with ads, as well as Trends, a business ideas paid newsletter. Sam later sold the wesbites for millions to Hubspot.
Steli Efti
This is an invaluable lesson in how to do sales. Steli lays down why you shouldn't be intimited by selling to businesses. Listen to this if you want some motivation!
Sam Eaton
This was a great episode because it was such a departure from the usual guests. Sam Eaton joined the podcast and spoke to Courtland about how he had made a custom software for his sister's cookie business rather than her using Shopify.
Tara Reed
One of my favourite episodes here! Tara was making $5m a year back in 2020 from teaching people how to make apps without code. She taught them business fundamentals and not just the technical parts and I distinctly remember her saying founder having to have a "no broke customers" mindset when it comes to pricing their products.
Pete Codes
This is my episode! Sorry, I couldn't resist some self-promotion. I chatted to Courtland about my No CS Degree website back in January 2020.
